habits wordle What are You Putting on Repeat?

I used to think that if I could just get it right this time, then I’d be set for life. An older, wiser person (or just myself a couple years later) would have told me that life doesn’t work like that.

Your life isn’t made up of the few big moments when you did well; it’s made up of your everyday: work, sleep, food, and everything in between.

The big events are like sprinkles on top of your ice cream – they make it look nicer and add a little flavor but no matter how much you add, it’s still called ice cream.

I’m beginning to realize how much of my life is made up habits – the things that I do over and over. Nicole Krauss describes habits in the book, Man Walks Into a Room:

“Without habits, we’d be unidentifiable.
We’d have to reinvent ourselves every minute.”

I was struck by the truth of that statement. My habits paint a picture of who I am and what I believe in; when I change my habits, I am reinventing myself.

Well, talk about pressure – and I thought my daily life was something I could just forget after a week or so passed. Seriously, can you even remember what you did two Wednesdays ago? My daily choices are in some ways even more important than the big ones. It’s the small things that are repeated.

I suddenly want to write up a list of daily habits for each area of my life:

  • Run six miles.
  • Drink a gallon of water.
  • Serve in a homeless shelter.
  • Write a book…

Okay, just kidding.

Reasonable Daily Habits

  1. exercise for 15 minutes
  2. drink a cup of hot tea
  3. read a chapter of a book I like
  4. eat dinner with my family
  5. start my morning with prayer

These things are small and may not mean much by themselves, but little things add up.

Being intentional about my habits also helps insure that I’m living the life I desire for myself. Even if I can’t remember what I did last week, I’ll know that it included my daily habits – actions that I can be proud of and stand behind.

What are you doing with your daily life?

Find the Ray of Light

This is where I am for the next few days and I plan to bask in the glorious rays of light filtering through wide open windows, breathing in the fresh mountain air.

That is all. That is enough.

“Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” -Margaret Mead

Sometimes it becomes too much. You can only take so much as a woman, a wife, a mother. You see things you never thought you’d see. Your world seems to be falling apart around you. Something has to change.

Haven’t you felt that way sometimes?

I know I have.

The reality is that the way I’ve felt and experiences I’ve endured pale in light of the experience of Liberian women who risked their lives to take on the warlords and government. Even more amazing is that they won.

They won peace for their shattered country in 2003. What started with one woman having enough of terror and fighting and killing became a movement that changed a nation and the history of their country.

You can watch the documentary online at PBS. It’s less than an hour, but it will inspire, uplift and motivate you to take charge, make change and think about what you can do for yourself, your children and your world.

Wonder if you should watch it?

This is what others have said about it…

“Unbelievably inspiring.” — Anna Quindlen

“This film could change the world.” — Michael Moore

“You won’t be quite the same person after seeing this documentary.” — Gloria Steinem

It’s real simple.

We exist in a world that moves so fast we lose (or momentarily forget) our humanity. Or maybe we don’t forget our own humanity, but we forget the humanity of the person on the other side of the screen.

Today, will you remember? Try it.

Then tomorrow and every tomorrow after that, will you remember too?

It could change everything…

Powerful message from Derek Sivers, author of Anything You Want.

When we yell at our car or coffee machine, it’s fine because they’re just mechanical appliances.

So when we yell at a website or company, using our computer or phone appliance, we forget it’s not an appliance, but a person that’s affected.

It’s dehumanizing to have thousands of people passing through our computer screens, so we do things we’d never do if they were sitting next to us.

It’s too overwhelming to remember that at the end of every computer is a real person, a lot like you, whose birthday was last week, who has three best friends but nobody to spoon at night, and is personally affected by what you say.

Even if you remember it right now, will you remember it next time you’re overwhelmed, or perhaps never forget it again?

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that.”
-Martin Luther King Jr.

A legacy of inspiration and social change will forever be intertwined with the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His words and courage send a powerful message to the hopeless and downtrodden, to the oppressed and weary.

Wherever you are today, remember that your tomorrow could look vastly different than any you could have imagined if you hold fast to your dream.

Here’s my small tribute to his great legacy…

Let this be a reminder that 2012 will be a year of taking risks…

making things happen…

being a dreamer… AND a doer.

This is the year of the creative, the artist, the image maker, YOU.

Use the comments to share how you plan to make 2012 INSANELY GREAT!

I’m reinventing the 365 Photography Project … hoping to improve my images 300% (or at least have fun on the way).

First image of the year is TEXTURE. The background on the quote above is a close-up image I shot today of one of my office lights. Texture will also be the first photo series I tackle this year. Here’s to an amazing 365 (or 366) photo project journey!

COFFEE. It brings a smile to the face of many a night owl. It’s been known to suppress appetite. It wakes you up and keeps you going all day long. It can even calm you down, IF you’re prone to ADHD-like symptoms. There’s an entire culture created around it.

COLOR. It brightens your day, your life, your world. It decorates your space. It creates and enhances your mood. Everyone has their favorite, but most people choose blue. There’s an entire psychology created around it.

How can you combine these two favorites to create some decoration for your office?
SIMPLE.

Here’s what you need:

Glass jar or vase
Coffee beans (not grounds!)
Colorful sticky notes (in all sizes)

I found the glass jar in the image at a thrift store… sticky notes were on sale at Target.
Total cost: $5
Hours of delight: UNLIMITED

It’s time to learn it, embrace it, experience it. A life of abundance.

A life without self-imposed limits. Do you believe it’s possible?

Listen to what Steve Jobs says it will take for you to make that happen…

Here’s the transcript of the video:

When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside that world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money.

That’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.

Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.

What’s stopping you?!?

Know someone who went through the LEGO building stage? Fascination with all things LEGO? Pieces strewn all over the floor just waiting to attack bare feet?

Of course you do. It’s an international phenomenon that has been running for generations. With the advent of online sharing, youtube videos for sharing, and LEGO.com for games, commercials, and more, it’s simply growing by leaps and bounds. And of course there is LEGO creator online where actual LEGO master builders walk you through how to make things. Even The Lego Ideas Book Seven Simple Steps to Mastery: December Daily 3, assembled fromt the creations of hundreds of avid fans is now one of the top sellers on Amazon.

It’s a phenom you can’t ignore. Or at least I can’t with a little one who honestly believes he may grow up to become one of the master builders at LEGO.com. Every single day he devotes himself to new creations, then we capture them (as often as he’ll let me) before he breaks them to rebuild… always bigger, better, more intricate and complicated than the last.

The way to become a Master Lego Builder is not so different than mastering anything.

SEVEN SIMPLE STEPS TO MASTERY

  1. Practice every day with the tools you have.
  2. Improvise to make up for any tools or specific pieces you don’t have.
  3. Continue learning daily through videos, tutorials and books.
  4. Draw inspiration from everything in your life: books, movies, trips, anything.
  5. Talk to others about what you create to share your excitement and build community.
  6. Capture your creations in images and video so you can share and learn.
  7. Never give up.
Wouldn’t you say these rules apply to almost anything you want to achieve?

The first title of this article replaced “Planning” with “Forced.” So it read, “Forced Creative Organization and Inspiration.” The funny thing is that it rings more true, but doesn’t sound very pleasant. And I really want this December Daily challenge to be pleasant… at the very least. In fact, I want it to be creative and inspiring and full of life’s joyful moments.

I stumbled across the idea via twitter when quite a few of my scrappy friends were talking about getting prepared. Being late to the game I had to get a move on to figure out what I wanted to do. For the record, there are many ways to look at December Daily… not unlike a photography project 365.

For me, it’ll be about capturing the daily gifts that come with the life I’ve been given and this beautiful wintry season of wonder. I also just finished reading One Thousand Gifts Planning Creative Organization and Inspiration: December Daily 1 by Ann Voskamp (and absolutely recommend it!). So this will be the beginning of writing down and celebrating one thousand gifts in my life. That’s pretty par for the course in my life… find ways to efficiently combine or work two or more tasks into one to save time, energy and resources.

So here’s today’s December Daily gift… my daughter’s shoes. You would think that after 17 years of seeing her shoes… from the adorable pink newborn slippers to the bright toddler tennies… that I’d have enough, but apparently not. I walked in her room tonight and saw her shoe organizer. Is she like me or what? Organized. Efficient. Everything all lined up.

Here’s what I noticed. Um, she likes Converse. She likes to be comfortable. She likes color. She is an All Star.

This is a moment and memory I want to remember forever. She won’t always be living in my home (gasp, heart in throat as I write that), but the simple things, like well-worn shoes will always live in my heart. Well, not literally you know, as I don’t really have a thing for dirt. But symbolically.

What’s on your heart this month? Up for a December Daily challenge? I’d love to have you join me!
