Late Fall “Urban Country Girl” Senior Portait Session: Outside the Photo Studio

teen-identity-senior-portrait-rachael-gallery-image

Fall and winter are beautiful seasons to photograph senior portraits. The weather reminds me of my days in Seattle with crisp winters and cool breezes. It gets me thinking about being outside and enjoying the beauty that nature holds, and reminds me of the importance of stepping outside the photo studio. Early in my photography career, I spent more time in natural light, but the more popular my … [Read more...]

Let Me Be Me: A Lesson from Teen Girls

teen-identity-team-blog-pic

It's a frequent truth, oft repeated in books and movies, that the master often becomes the student and the pupil becomes the teacher. I frequently feel that way with my amazing group of teen girls that I work with through Teen Identity. Our vision is to guide them toward finding their voice, unleashing their true beauty and embracing the amazing power they each possess inside. Yet, why is it that … [Read more...]

Rookie Photo Mistake (D284)

I'm not sure what defines a rookie, but I certainly can still make a rookie mistake now and again. Don't you? My rookie mistake is missing the detail in this shot... the small piece of stray grass that found its way into my frame. I loved the way the green leaves were so well defined and such crisp colors... in contrast to the pinecone, which offset the framing of the shot. What I didn't see … [Read more...]

A Style All Her Own (D187)

My mother in law was one fashionable woman. She could pull off any form of leopard print without a problem. Even her figurines and decorations in her home were stylish (see exhibit A below). She would coach me on being a little more edgy, adding some spice to my wardrobe, and even helped me along with some trendy purses. Perhaps she learned it while living in Los Angeles... maybe she was born … [Read more...]

Merging Blur and Bokeh to Transform Light Photography (D185)

There's nothing like finding a good excuse to break out the Christmas lights in March. Today's Theme Thursday of Blur or Bokeh was just such an opportunity. I got a few ideas for doing some studio photography shots from Chris Gatcum's book, Camera Creative. Then I did what I always do and started something entirely different, but kept the Christmas lights. In fact, the lights became the focus … [Read more...]

Reflect, Dream, Believe… and Shoot for the Moon (D153)

I can't quite capture in words what I'm feeling tonight. Today and this entire past week have been a roller coaster, complete with ups and downs, plenty of speed and momentum, and even a little nausea thrown in. I won't go into all the details, but I would like to briefly share the final thoughts I have before this week wraps and we start all over again tomorrow. To top it off, tomorrow is the … [Read more...]

Fashion Magazine Pop Photography (D146)

tasra365-color-pop-2

That's my style... or so I've been told. I think it has a nice ring to it and describes one style of photography that I like to do, especially with the teen girls I photograph. I'm not sure it's even a defined style, but if you were to try to find it, you'd see it in the teen fashion magazines like Seventeen. One main difference is the way I shoot the girls... less revealing and sexy, more fun and … [Read more...]

Dining with Picasso (D117)

tasra365-picasso-2

Instead of buying stuff for one another this Christmas, Ron and I decided to give each other the gift of time. So we planned an evening out, dinner at Picasso Wine Bar and dessert at Starbucks. It was the perfect gift and made for some interesting images for today. I particularly love the colors, lines, and shapes of what I found and captured. But I guess that's not surprising given the … [Read more...]

D115: We Finally Moved In

tasra365-home

This time last year we had only been in our house for about 10 days. And we had none of our stuff except what fit in our minivan for the drive cross country. The moving company hijacked our stuff for a month, including all the Christmas gifts so we made do with a couple air mattresses and camping chairs. Gifts were sparse, but we were warm and together and that's what mattered. Flash forward to … [Read more...]
