Updated: With so many new photogs starting their own 365 photo challenge, I thought it’d be fun to regularly post some flashbacks to 2010 from my tasra365 challenge, starting with 01.01.10. Fun to look back and see the lessons learned and image progression!

What’s more fun to shoot than sparkly and shiny jewelry? And even more interesting when hanging on a new body form designed for organizing jewelry and accessories. It’s the perfect match for my new year plan to unclutter my life in one week.

Feature Friday: Had to visit a number of different blogs before I found a committed photog who has been keeping up with the daily challenge. Let today be a day you recommit to improving your photography 300% in one year. It really is possible and probable if you make it a habit.

With that, today I am featuring a fellow tasra365-er, Paul Steinke. Paul is a Denver based wedding and portrait photographer. He just completed an entire year of daily photos and created a slideshow on his blog: One A Day, Every Day.

Check it out and let Paul serve as inspiration that it can be done! Imagine yourself posting a slideshow of all your images from the previous year!

1 Introducing 28 Dedicated & Inspiring Photographers via Twitter TuesdayWith more photographers signing up for the tasra365 challenge every week, it’s really starting to catch fire on Twitter! I love seeing the support and encouragement between photographers… no rock star photographers, no levels of pro versus amateur, just a passionate group of creative visionaries aspiring to improve their photography 300% in one year.

That support helps motivate and spur each photographer on to complete one more day in their challenge! Equally impressive are those who have dedicated themselves and developed the discipline to not miss a single day.

Stop by the photogs sites below and spread some comment love around. Just think about how much you love getting comments and make someone’s day! If you’d like to be added to the tweeps list, just leave a comment below.

1 Twitter Tuesday Featuring YOU! (2/9)I really can’t believe how quickly one week fades into another. Seems like I was just posting Twitter Tuesday and here it is again! So fun each week to see who is still working to improve their photography 300% in one year and post about it on twitter.

We’re getting close to 400 photographers who have signed up for tasra365. I’d love to see it reach beyond that as we continue to focus on our creativity and develop the discipline necessary to take our art further than we may have even imagined!

Would LOVE for you to take a minute to visit the following photogs working out their craft and sharing their heart every day in images! If you’d like to be added to the list, just leave a comment below.

NEW! Nancy Brown momentsbehindthelens.blogspot.com

You’re all set up for a photo shoot. Maybe it’s one of your first, you’re doing it for free to get practice or build your portfolio. Or perhaps it’s a client that booked you after seeing your images on Facebook or your blog.

You’re excited. You’ve looked at images for inspiration. You connected with your client online or via phone to make sure you understand what they’re looking for. Your gear is packed.

You don’t have a checklist to follow yet, but you’re pretty sure you’ve got everything ready. You even remembered to clean your lenses.

Off you go to the shoot…confident, inspired, ready.

After the initial greeting and small talk, you get set up. Tripod, lights, reflector or maybe you’re all natural light and hand held.

Here you go… shot 1, shot 2. Check the settings, adjust to fit the lighting conditions. Shot 3. Looking better.

Shot 4. No good. You check the back of your camera and the image isn’t showing up in the viewfinder. You think it’s just taking a while. You wait. Then decide to just take another shot. No good. That’s not working either. You look at the menu. Uh-oh.

What just happened? Do you know? Have you ever been there?

Battery is flashing. You forgot to recharge your battery! In all the excitement, you forgot one of the basic elements. This is the #1 thing NOT TO DO on a photo shoot.

(I’m not saying this happened to me. I’m not saying it didn’t either. I’m just saying…charge your battery.)

tasra365 photo jump What NOT to Do on a Photo Shoot (D120)

Today’s shot was impromptu. Pressed for time, I shot in auto. 5 quick shots. Not enough light or even height for the girls to really jump. So many things I would do differently. Can’t wait to get them in the studio for a REAL photo shoot! Processed with Kubota actions in Photoshop to change the color and make it fun!

D91: Tinsel Town

Tasra Dawson —  November 30, 2009 — 4 Comments

There is tinsel on my Christmas tree.

You may not know this, but I’m not really a tinsel kind of girl. I like things a little more plain and simple. More focus on lights and ornaments, less on the fake silver stuff. But there it is on my tree.
tasra365 tinseltown D91: Tinsel Town

One word: Kids.

They wanted tinsel. So this year being the first that my little one decorated the tree, I let it go. The most fun part of it was the moment my teenage daughter asked what tinsel was. She didn’t know because up until now I’ve successfully avoided it. That’s a pretty good stretch if you ask me! This year I was foiled.

I figured I should probably snap a picture of it as we never know if it will make an appearance on the Dawson family tree again!

Manual: Page 50—Two Button Reset.

Images: Looked at images in the tasra365 Flickr gallery. I haven’t been able to keep up with it daily and was amazed at how many images are now in the group!

I needed to get out of the house. It was time for a change of scenery. My pictures were feeling ordinary. I needed to shoot something new, different, un-ordinary.

So I jumped in the car and followed the setting sun as it cast its warm glow across the trees and made even the traffic on a small country road seem mystical. It was the golden hour and I was determined to chase the light until I found something meaningful to shoot.
tasra365 light Chasing the Light & Missing My Grandmother (D77)

I pulled into a park and got out. Before I walked too far, I came upon the image above. I don’t even know what they’re called anymore, but I used to. They remind me of my grandmother who passed away earlier this year. She lived out in the hills of Arroyo Grande, California. As a young girl, I would go exploring in the hills and I always came upon these huge plants that looked like feathers to me. I would pick a few and keep them with me the entire trip.

Today’s image reminds me of my grandmother. I didn’t get to say goodbye. I miss her.

D76: Of Triangles & Tweets

Tasra Dawson —  November 15, 2009 — 2 Comments

I’m in awe of the power of Twitter and social media to connect and unite disparate people with similar passions.

Today I’m letting Trianglehead (aka Kris Hollingsworth) take over the tasra365 post because I love what he had to say about his photographic journey….
tasra365 fog D76: Of Triangles & Tweets

I was stuck in a rut. I had been a computer programmer for six years. For the last two years I worked on the side as a photographer. I was out with my camera every weekend and whenever I could squeeze it in after work as well. Passionate is not a word I ever used to describe my relationship with photography but many other people used it often when talking about the time I spent.

Then just before the big economic crisis our company got acquired. Our offices moved and I wasn’t interested in relocating. I was just starting to pick up traction as a photographer and was starting to get paid for some of the work I was doing; so I decided to try and make my living doing what I loved to do.

Well, like many people I wanted to be a photographer, not a business owner. I very quickly got bogged down by what it meant to run a business, especially in the economic environment that began shortly after making the decision. Between keeping books, estimating quarterly taxes, advertising, marketing and the myriad of other decisions that needed to be made I got very disenchanted with the idea of making my living as a photographer. I didn’t market myself well so I wasn’t getting as much interest as I expected. I didn’t really know how to set pricing so I felt enormous stress every time anyone asked me about a job. It wasn’t a good situation and just turned into a lackadaisical approach to getting anything really done. I was just getting through each day because I had to and I started shooting less and less which eventually led me to close up shop.

After admitting defeat as a business owner I was considering a lot of different options in my life. Do I…

– go back to programming and fight my way back into that job market?

– go find someone to hire me as a photog assistant and try and work my way up?

– go to school?

– get a random 9-5 while I figure it out, but who knows how long that will take?

The second one was the most appealing (And still is, truth be told), but because of my location it would be nearly impossible. I was definitely feeling trapped and I hadn’t really done anything with my camera for months. It had become an absurdly expensive prop and paper weight.

But now we’re on day 52 (75 now) and I’m happy to say I’ve rediscovered my love. For me, this challenge has really been different from other 365 methods I’ve seen in the requirement to view the work of other photographers every day. That’s been the best part of the experience. I’ve learned more studying the work of accomplished professionals than I ever would have learned in 50 days on my own. I’ve even started taking the challenge a little further; when I find a photographer’s work who just leaves me in awe, I not only view their images, but if they are an older photographer I go and read about their lives. How they got through this world doing such amazing work. For contemporary photographers I do this as well, but I also go and find their blogs and read about their experiences in their own words.

From Zack Arias to Henri Cartier-Bresson, I’ve been inspired time and again from their stories. Whether they just fell into it and became successful or they tried once and failed only to make it later in their lives. They’ve all had amazing experiences and it’s well worth the time to try and understand how and why they succeeded.

So that brings us to today. I just started all my paperwork to return to school to pursue a degree in photography. I’m studying for the ACT and applying for grants and scholarships. It looks like at the very least I’ll be able to get the first two years of school paid for.

I’m hoping after school to find a job somewhere working for someone as a photographer or as an assistant and learn the ropes of business in a real world setting. Then maybe when I’m more prepared to do it, starting my own studio; but really, be it working for myself or someone else, I just want to make my living with my camera in hand.

So your challenge has definitely got me back on the road to getting there. And for that I thank you with all my heart. Also thanks to everyone else who is sharing in this journey as well. I try and look through the flickr group everyday to see how everyone else there is doing and I hope they are getting as much value out of the experience as I am!

As for my images for this challenge they are being posted on flickr.

Warmest Regards,

–Kris Hollingsworth

P.S. Can you figure out what today’s image is? I wanted to do something entirely different.

D48: Take a Second Look

Tasra Dawson —  October 18, 2009 — 13 Comments

At first glance, you might just see two simple leaves. That’s what I saw at first and grabbed this shot inspired by the photographer I mentioned yesterday. However, as I converted to black and white and enhanced the image, I began to study the image, to see beyond the basic.

That’s when I started to notice things…
tasra365 leaves D48: Take a Second Look

Details: The veins in the leaves are so intricate and clearly defined, not unlike our fingerprints. I’ll bet no two leaves have the same design. It’s incredible to think about all the leaves in the world with their own signature set of markings.

Flaws: Did you notice the clipped top edge of the leaf of the left or the holes in the leaf on the right? Both have their own flaws, but they are tied together, “married” together, if you will. Not unlike our marriages today, two flawed individuals hanging on to each other and working things out the best we can.

Perspective: The longer I looked at each leaf as an individual, the more I began to see other shapes and images within the leaf. On the left, I began to see the shell of a turtle. The right became a fish, not unlike Dory in Finding Nemo. Take a look, spend some time studying the image and tell me what you start to see.

This simple activity of slowing down, processing what I was seeing (literally and figuratively), and allowing myself to look deeper than the superficial was transforming…for myself and the image. I wonder how often I miss transformation in my life and outlook because I fail to slow down, process, and see beyond the ordinary. I just wonder.

Manual: Page 20—Digital Vari-Programs. Quite a bit of range in the programs and what they do, but I must admit I love the control of manual.

Images: Our fellow 365-er Pat Offord created a new Flickr gallery of nature images he found. They are inspiring. Didn’t even know you could create your own gallery like that. Check it out and while you’re there go ahead and join our group too!

D28: Flashback to the Past

Tasra Dawson —  September 28, 2009 — 4 Comments

tasra365-rollipI absolutely love old photos, even if they’re worn and faded, even if they weren’t composed or exposed properly. There is something about seeing images from the past that makes me feel connected to something bigger than the present day glitz and gloss of modern day living.

Just a few days ago I was introduced to a new site, Rollip.com, that converts the new into old. It’s a Polaroid pic maker and you’ll love it. For today’s photo, I shot with the intention of converting it to Polaroid so I wanted something more classic and wasn’t concerned about color or lighting since I knew it would be altered. Didn’t do any processing, just uploaded to Rollip and with a click of the button I’ve got my flashback to the past.
tasra365 rollip D28: Flashback to the Past

Just for fun I ran a couple of my iPhone pics from New York through Rollip and shared those below. Love the look and feel it gives the city. Can’t wait to visit NYC again this weekend!

Manual: Page 129—Specifications. So if I wasn’t reading through the camera manual completely, I would probably never read this section in the back right before the index. But if you want to learn a lot about the specifics of your camera, this is the best place to go. All the details in a neat, tidy table just ready for the taking. Check it out!

Images: Since I was already on Rollip, I decided to join and visit their Flickr group and browse through the images.

D13: When Pictures Find You

Tasra Dawson —  September 13, 2009 — 10 Comments

There is such a vast difference between a picture you make and a picture you take. Today I was “making” a picture, coming up with an idea for today’s shot when a picture found me. I love those moments.
