Watercolor Fashion Sketch

fashion-sketch-blue-scarf-tmdawson Fashions fade, style is eternal.
― Yves Saint-Laurent

Nothing says style to me than a great scarf wrapped well. That’s why I love drawing/sketching/painting scarves in my images. I may be just getting my feet wet again in the art and sketch world, but I can feel the familiar pull of my own style and preferences dictate what I draw.

Favorite part of the entire image… that beautiful blue scarf in all its lovely hues. Find me one of those somewhere!

Today’s drawing: watercolor pencils, watercolor crayons, 300g watercolor paper, paintbrush, PS6. Originally sketched and colored by hand. Imported to Photoshop to add canvas texture and painted highlights and lowlights.

Fashion Sketch Color Palette Spring 2013

The expression ‘balancing act’ is something we all relate to as we strive to find harmony in the frantic pace of our everyday lives.

- Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute®

I may not be a fashionista in real life, but I play one on Pinterest and in my sketch pads. I love fashion sketches… almost more than any other. I don’t know if it’s the design, the color, the art or the fashion… or that it all plays out into a delectable array of beauty and design.

Whatever it is, I was delighted to come across the new color for Spring 2013. It’s a color palette that seems practical, yet whimsical. While I may not upgrade my entire wardrobe to reflect these colors, you will surely see them in some of my new sketches!

Which color and outfit is your favorite?

Walmart + Photography = Laughter

Tell me you’ve heard of the popular site, People of Walmart. Although I’m not one to poke fun at others, I have to admit that the first time I stumbled across the site, I was glued to the computer screen for over an hour. And I was crying from laughing so hard. People of Walmart are hilarious and the book is too!

Now there is a book with new photos, shocking moments, and even celebrity sightings in our favorite place to shop… Walmart. The book was just released last month and is a fun gift or stocking stuffer for that hard to please person. Seriously, the bad hair days and style choices will have you laughing out loud.

The Last Shot: A New Atlanta Senior Portrait Tradition (D237)

Ever have a creative moment when you’re in the zone, everything is clicking… camera, subjects, weather, locations?

Today was one of those days.

After back to back senior model photo shoots for the last three weeks, I wondered what today would hold. With five of our Teen Identity models and team, I knew I had the subjects I needed. And we had fashion from Christa-Taylor and C28, so style was covered. One of our models is a genius with hair and makeup, so that was set.

So we set our sights high and decided to center the photo shoot around the theme…

STAND OUT

In every group shot, we looked for ways to make someone stand out. It’s all part of the Teen Identity creed to be bold and beautiful by being yourself.

The girls did a fabulous job. But after four hours of hair, makeup, and shooting, the silliness and giggles began to take over.

So, this was the last shot of the day…

Totally silly. Totally free. And a new tradition is born.

What traditions have you incorporated into your shoots?

A Style All Her Own (D187)

My mother in law was one fashionable woman. She could pull off any form of leopard print without a problem. Even her figurines and decorations in her home were stylish (see exhibit A below). She would coach me on being a little more edgy, adding some spice to my wardrobe, and even helped me along with some trendy purses.

Perhaps she learned it while living in Los Angeles… maybe she was born with it.

Me… not so much.
My mother in law once gave me a burnt orange colored purse that I knew had to be expensive… she was not a bargain basement kind of shopper. I secretly wondered if they had it in black and whether or not I could exchange it. Black is better, goes with everything, or so I thought. When my husband actually asked her, she got me on the phone and schooled me about being more daring, trying something new, and didn’t I know that this was the latest rage in purses? I didn’t, but I kept the purse, for her.

17 Pairs of Shoes
As I pack for WPPI, I’m reading other photographers on Twitter talking about their new outfits or packing 17 pairs of shoes for 4 days (yes, I’m talking about you, Jasmine Star :-)). The only things I bought to take with me to WPPI this year are a new tube of toothpaste and some protein bars for the trip. Not very exciting, I know.

So it got me thinking about my mother in law and her style, which made me want to photograph one of her figurines. They remind me of her and for some reason I’m missing her tonight. I was browsing through pictures in iPhoto and saw some images from when she visited shortly after our son was born. So full of life, such a beautiful woman, such a tragedy that we lost her so early.

Goodnight, Dear Void…
I’m not sure where all this is going, but I’ll just end by quoting one my favorite lines from You’ve Got Mail when Meg Ryan is putting up Christmas ornaments on her tree and missing her Mom so much it hurts:

“I don’t really want an answer. I just want to send this cosmic question out into the void. So goodnight, dear void.”

What cosmic questions are going through your mind right now? Send them out into the great void… or write them down in the comments and let me know I’m not crazy.

Image Setup: On a happier note, I’m in love with my new Portable Lighting Studio. Normally I have to set up my full  light kit and white seamless background when I want to get a close up or product shot. Not anymore! This is going to significantly improve my shots and the time it takes to get them. I’ll definitely tell you more later, but today’s shot is with a 50 mm lens and the portable lighting studio which comes with two lights and a mini tripod. Post processing was just increasing contrast. Gotta love that.
