Archives For book review

For most of my life, certainly all of my adult years, I have dreaded my birthday. Not like some people pretend to, but really, wholeheartedly, and with fervor wished the day would just pass swiftly and without any notice. Or barring that, if I could just sleep through the entire day and not ever wake up until it had passed, that would be a good secondary option.

This year, however, I’m feeling quite different. I owe that in part to a book I recently read, “Queen of Your Own Life: The Grown-Up Woman’s Guide to Claiming Happiness and Getting the Life You Deserve Queen of Your Own Life.” The basic premise is that you are and should be queen of your own life. Yet most of us treat ourselves like Cinderella before she met her fairy godmother. We criticize and rant about what we haven’t achieved, how tired we are, what number the scale says, and never even realize that we are our own worst enemy. Or worse, we realize it and don’t change it.

For some reason, the message of their book struck incredibly close to home and resonated strongly with me. Probably because my birthday is so close and maybe it was just time for me to finally get it. Either way, I’m actually looking forward to my birthday this year and next year I’m going to throw a BIG celebration. That’s my plan… at least for now.

What about you? Are you a birthday dreader like me? Or have you become the queen of your own life?

The Decision to Go Amish

Tasra Dawson —  January 13, 2011 — 8 Comments

It would be a pretty big life-changing decision to become Amish, wouldn’t you think? Along with giving up electricity, that would mean giving up computers, telephones, TV, movies, cell phones, and the list just keeps going. On the other hand, there is something so alluring about the idea of living a plain and simple life, one that is dedicated to family, hard work, and God. How could that be so bad?

thesearch amishfiction suzannefisher The Decision to Go AmishThe idea of becoming Amish is one of the storylines in Suzanne Woods Fisher’s new book, The Search. It’s part of the Lancaster County Secrets series. Suzanne has also written The Choice and The Waiting.

I knew I was in for a treat with The Search and chose a night where I wouldn’t mind staying up late to read since I know I can’t stop once I start. I wasn’t disappointed.

The story is told from the point of view of multiple characters. My favorites were Bess, a 15 year old, who gains spunk and spark as the story progresses… and Lainey O’Toole, a twenty-something searching for some answers and trying to resolve a difficult past. Their growing friendship throughout the book, as well as the way each character evolves and changes is absolutely inspiring to read (I was going to say watch because it seemed so real I felt like I could see them!).

The story is about redemption, love (but not overly sappy), family, friends, and following the path you’ve been set to walk. As I finished the novel and set it aside, I decided that for my next birthday I want to go on an Amish retreat. I’m certainly not going to convert to being Amish, but I would love to spend a week experiencing the plain living that goes on in a traditional Amish home. This book is sensational, I only wish it were about 3 times longer so I could have kept reading!

maxlucado jennalucado teenbook You Were Made to Make A DifferenceOne of my favorite authors has now co-written a book with his daughter… Max Lucado and Jenna Lucado Bishop recently released their new book, You Were Made to Make a Difference. You Were Made to Make A DifferenceBesides the incredibly cool earthy looking cover, the inside pages are equally fun and reader-friendly. It’s perfectly suited for the teen audience it was written for and provides stories of real teen discovering that it’s never too early to make a difference in the world.

One shocking quote from the book is a statistic from the CDC…

Hearts need healing. In 2006, suicide was the third leading cause of death for young people in the United States ages 15 to 24.

That should not be. Whether it’s through books like these to encourage youth, programs like Teen Identity to help raise their self esteem or individual mentoring of young people, we must take a stand for the next generation. Let’s make 2011 the year we see young people begin to step up and take their place as world changers. Are you with me?

That’s a tall order. Finding the answer for what to do when life doesn’t turn out the way you want. Who wants to turn to Plan B? For some of us, Plan B isn’t even an option (like for Meryl Streep in Devil Wears Prada).

For most of us “regular” folk though, we often have to come up with Plan B, C and even D sometimes. I know my Plan A that I wrote down in high school about when I would graduate, get married, have kids, etc. didn’t even come close to hitting the mark. Anyone else have that same experience? I guess it’s worse for those of us who like to plan (me) because we actually feel like we have a sense of control over the outcome of our lives. It’s really all an illusion, but sometimes we forget that.

planbbook Plan B: What To Do When Your Dreams Are ShatteredI recently read Pete Wilson’s new book, Plan B Plan B: What To Do When Your Dreams Are Shattered, which got me thinking about these ideas. He wrote the book for people whose lives haven’t turned out the way they planned. For those people who feel confused, lost and hopeless because of that very fact. I was a little nervous about starting to read it though because I didn’t want a feel good, God is in control, pat me on the back kind of answer to the issue. I didn’t want condescending or trite answers. I wasn’t disappointed.

Pete Wilson really seems to have such a compassionate heart for people and wants to help them through the tough times in their life. So often we have to go through the fire to get to the other side. Pete wants to help people get through faster by fighting against the change less and asking the right questions to get to some real answers.

His ideas about making peace with doubt and moving past the feelings of crisis, panic, fear and paralysis are actually pretty practical. Working with the situation, instead of fighting and railing against it is something we know to do, but the way Pete represents it makes it seem doable.

This is one that’ll stay on my bookshelf as I know I’ll be picking it up again to learn more about embracing Plan B Plan B: What To Do When Your Dreams Are Shattered.

Tell me you’ve heard of the popular site, People of Walmart. Although I’m not one to poke fun at others, I have to admit that the first time I stumbled across the site, I was glued to the computer screen for over an hour. And I was crying from laughing so hard. People of Walmart Walmart + Photography = Laughter are hilarious and the book is too!

Now there is a book with new photos Walmart + Photography = Laughter, shocking moments, and even celebrity sightings in our favorite place to shop… Walmart. The book was just released last month and is a fun gift or stocking stuffer for that hard to please person. Seriously, the bad hair days and style choices will have you laughing out loud.

One of the recent business books I’ve been reading is Rework Quotes from Rework: Good Enough Is Fine by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hanson. Their ideas and advice challenge everything we think to be true in the way we work. Just look at this…

Today Michael Hyatt shared his favorite insights from the book… since they mirrored many of my own, I thought I’d share them with you as well.

  • Learning from mistakes is over-rated
  • Scratch your own itch
  • No time is no excuse
  • You need less than you think
  • Launch now
  • Interruption is the enemy of productivity
  • Good enough is fine
  • Long lists don’t get done
  • Say no by default
  • Don’t write it down
  • Press releases are spam
  • Marketing is not a department
  • Send people home at 5

Author, aspiring photographer, triathlete… that’s Mary DeMuth. She writes amazing books, enjoys taking pictures, and trains for mini triathlons in her spare time. She wanted to be a doctor when she grew up, but instead has become an award-winning author. She’s considering venturing into the world of young adult or teen fiction to take on the topics of identity, authenticity, beauty, and abandonment, so you know I’ll be keeping my eye on that.

LifeInDefiance book Cover Life in Defiance with Mary DeMuthFor the time being, she’s just finished book three in the Texas Trilogy: Life in Defiance. Her goal as a writer is “to write and tell stories in such a way that readers find healing and no longer feel alone.” Isn’t that a fantastic mission? She certainly tackles some hard issues in her latest novel, from abuse, violence, forgiveness, even murder.

I’ll admit that the first night I picked up her book, I was reading until 2 am. It had me on the edge of my seat until I finally had to give in and get some sleep. Bad idea. I woke from a horrible nightmare two hours later. So, word to the wise, don’t read this right before going to bed! Actually, I’m a little oversensitive to outside influence from media, either movies or books, so I’m usually careful not to watch or read anything that might make its way into my dreams. Guess it’s kudos to Mary that her book was that impactful that it became real to me.

Anyway, I finished the book last night… no bad dreams (smiley face). It was a powerful story of growth, trust, love, and redemption. The twist at the end surprised me… usually I can figure out the plot about two chapters in, but not this time. I kept reading because I couldn’t figure it out.

When asked what she hoped readers would take away from the book, this was her response, “That you may encounter Jesus in outcasts. It’s not always the folks who promote themselves as believers who truly walk as Jesus did. Jesus comes in distressing disguise. Will we miss Him?”

If you’re looking for a great summer read, a little escape and inspiration, I definitely recommend Mary’s new book, Life in Defiance.

Because I’m such an avid blogger and serious lover of books, publishers send me books to review and giveaway. Two of the books I received recently were similar in topic, O Me of Little Faith: True Confessions of a Spiritual Weakling Faith, Grace, and Free Books and The Naked Gospel: The Truth You May Never Hear in Church Faith, Grace, and Free Books .

Both were compelling and had great messages that made me rethink faith, grace, and organized religion. O me of little faith Cover 210x300 Faith, Grace, and Free Books See what you think, then leave a comment to win a copy of both books.

Themes and Takeaway from O Me of Little Faith
In his book Jason Boyett says: It’s not the end of the world to experience doubt as a Christian — even the really scary “does God even exist?” kind of doubt. Your faith can not only withstand doubt, but can even be strengthened by it. As a doubter, you are not alone.

Doubt is not the opposite of faith, but a necessary companion to faith. Faith and doubt can and should exist side-by-side. Doubt is no excuse for inaction or paralysis as a follower of Christ. The best response to doubt, as a Christian, is to continue to live out your religious faith — to take action — even if the following sometimes gets ahead of the belief.

In Naked Gospel, Andrew Farley shares his heart: I found myself lying on the floor of my apartment, sobbing for hours on end: “God, I’m doing everything I’m supposed to do, and I still don’t feel closer to you. In fact, I feel worse than ever! How could this have gone wrong? I can’t see any way out. Help me.”

The Naked Gospel finds friends among those who are burned out on experience-chasing, ceremonialism, or legalism. It attacks churchy jargon and powerless ideas and puts forth a message that is simple but life-changing. With a fresh take on Scripture and unapologetic style, The Naked Gospel will challenge you and stir you to re-examine everything you thought you already knew.

A couple months ago I posted a review and giveaway of a new book, The Superstress Solution. It claims to have the remedy to:

  • stress in life Stress, Migraines, Exhaustion... What is Happening to Us?Relieve headaches and anxiety
  • Restore your ability to relax and sleep well
  • Control your weight
  • Build resilience against future stress

When I asked for honest comments from you about why you would want to read this book, the responses were amazing and sad at the same time. Why are we all suffering from stress, migraines and exhaustion? Why is this such a common occurrence that it doesn’t raise red flags and cause us to change? Is it really just about time and money… or is there something deeper going on?

  • I wonder if we really believe we’re worth the time and energy to take care of ourselves.
  • I wonder if we trust that we will be provided for if we don’t work so hard.
  • I wonder if we are afraid of slowing down and facing the reality of life, relationship, pain, and even grief.
  • I wonder what life would look like if we started taking care of ourselves the same way we take care of others.

What do you think? What’s really going on?

Here’s what some readers had to say…

  • I’m a 40-something non-traditional college student working towards an MBA and going through a divorce. Major overload and stress in my life!!
  • I’m always stressed. I have two kids, work full time and then I come home and my husband works evenings. We just got a new puppy also. Sometimes I think I take on way too much!
  • This morning, as I was getting ready for work, packing lunches, and dictating, uh, I mean GUIDING the children getting ready for school, I realized — I am at the end of my rope. Spent. Wiped out. EXHAUSTED! Any advice on how to get out of that rut would be most welcomed!!

Here is the winning comment from Karen R. …
Hi Tasra! oh boy, if this book has the answers, I would love to read them! I work 2 jobs (photographer and graphic designer), and I seem to have run out of time for sleep and exercise (I need to re-prioritize — or outsource and/or work faster, right?), and since working more (and sleeping less), I’ve definitely gained weight and my migraines kick in more after shooting a wedding or a long non-stop weekend of shooting and editing pix after a full week of working at my day job, and my neck seems to constantly be tight and/or hurts these days. Weeknights are dedicated also to editing pix, making albums, attending networking functions for photographers, or even teaching other photographers how to retouch and use Photoshop/Lightroom. I *know* that eating better and sleeping more would help to no end, but that’s just *part* of the equation.

Out of time? Yep! Help? Yes, please! (Oh, and I read my books n’ magazines on my lunch break — my one “myself” time most days during the week — so this book DEFINITELY would get read!) icon smile Stress, Migraines, Exhaustion... A mother and daughter experience a life-changing, soul-rattling journey from the American dream to a foreign land that will change their minds and break their hearts in ways they have never been broken before.

After reading through this entire book in less than 24 hours, I handed it to my daughter so we could experience and share it together. I think you will be profoundly moved by what my teenage daughter had to say when she finished the book a few hours later (she’s a fast reader!).

lovemercy lisa samson Book Review and Giveaway: Love Mercy by Lisa SamsonBefore Love Mercy was consequently dropped into my hesitant hands, I had been searching for God and all that He offers with growing impatience. After countless podcasts, sermons, books, and hard thinking, I came to the conclusion that what I was doing must not be working because my countenance was still lacking in the pleasure and peace I sought. I tried so hard to be a better person and to somehow get fulfillment from all of my “Christian” knowledge, but to no avail.

Therefore, with my humble conjecture, I believe God decided to help me out by handing me this book and, through my mom, telling me to read it. Hesitantly, but with an open mind, I did read Love Mercy by Lisa and Ty Samson. Now I find myself with rich and colorful food for thought.

Love Mercy practically takes its reader all the way from Kentucky to Swaziland and back again. It recounts the journey of Lisa & Ty Samson as they learn and grow in Swaziland. It also depicts the very thoughts that might have run through yours and my own mind as they saw images that the world knows all too well. A boy lives in a dump; people are taken advantage of; women and children raped. All this goes on and yet my own little world is as happy as ever.

The thing that struck me most was the pure action of the missionaries and locals. People who give with no thought as to whether or not they should are amazing. Love Mercy spoke of a pastor who had given his own children’s school money to another family, which had kids who could not afford to attend the government run school. Now, that very pastor has his own school where kids who cannot afford regular school, as well as his own, can attend.

This book taught me that love is not the notorious warm, mushy feeling. Love is action. Love is selflessness. Love is doing what really hurts for the sake of someone else. But, the funny thing is that the thing that hurt the most before, (i.e. giving something up), eventually becomes a pleasure. Soon it is no longer a burden to give up your time for the sake of someone else. It becomes a way of life.

Love Mercy also caused me to ask myself a question that before I wouldn’t have wanted to ask for fear of an unwanted answer. Well, now I am ready to ask it. The question is this: “What am I supposed to do?” One cannot possibly read a book like this and say, “Oh, that was nice,” and then return to ignorant living. God has commanded the human population to take care of the vulnerable and the weak. So, obviously the, “Oh, well, I just don’t think that’s my calling”, excuse is ruled out. I am called to help, but what does that look like, exactly?

For, now I think that looks like me brightening the day of everyone I meet. Most of the people I meet do not need food, or clean drinking water, but maybe they need a friend, a smile, a hug, or fresh baked cookies; the possibilities are endless. Until I can go to Africa to hold the dying child, maybe I need to brighten the day of the healthy one in America.

I won’t say this book changed my life forever, or say that things will never be the same. I know there will be some days that I will forget, or be stupid and selfish and decide not to help. But I now have a little bit more of the pieces to the puzzle. I am going to take one day at a time, and I am grateful for the insight.

Proverbs 22:2: Rich and poor have this in common: The Lord is the Maker of them all.
