maxlucado jennalucado teenbook You Were Made to Make A DifferenceOne of my favorite authors has now co-written a book with his daughter… Max Lucado and Jenna Lucado Bishop recently released their new book, You Were Made to Make a Difference. You Were Made to Make A DifferenceBesides the incredibly cool earthy looking cover, the inside pages are equally fun and reader-friendly. It’s perfectly suited for the teen audience it was written for and provides stories of real teen discovering that it’s never too early to make a difference in the world.

One shocking quote from the book is a statistic from the CDC…

Hearts need healing. In 2006, suicide was the third leading cause of death for young people in the United States ages 15 to 24.

That should not be. Whether it’s through books like these to encourage youth, programs like Teen Identity to help raise their self esteem or individual mentoring of young people, we must take a stand for the next generation. Let’s make 2011 the year we see young people begin to step up and take their place as world changers. Are you with me?

That’s a tall order. Finding the answer for what to do when life doesn’t turn out the way you want. Who wants to turn to Plan B? For some of us, Plan B isn’t even an option (like for Meryl Streep in Devil Wears Prada).

For most of us “regular” folk though, we often have to come up with Plan B, C and even D sometimes. I know my Plan A that I wrote down in high school about when I would graduate, get married, have kids, etc. didn’t even come close to hitting the mark. Anyone else have that same experience? I guess it’s worse for those of us who like to plan (me) because we actually feel like we have a sense of control over the outcome of our lives. It’s really all an illusion, but sometimes we forget that.

planbbook Plan B: What To Do When Your Dreams Are ShatteredI recently read Pete Wilson’s new book, Plan B Plan B: What To Do When Your Dreams Are Shattered, which got me thinking about these ideas. He wrote the book for people whose lives haven’t turned out the way they planned. For those people who feel confused, lost and hopeless because of that very fact. I was a little nervous about starting to read it though because I didn’t want a feel good, God is in control, pat me on the back kind of answer to the issue. I didn’t want condescending or trite answers. I wasn’t disappointed.

Pete Wilson really seems to have such a compassionate heart for people and wants to help them through the tough times in their life. So often we have to go through the fire to get to the other side. Pete wants to help people get through faster by fighting against the change less and asking the right questions to get to some real answers.

His ideas about making peace with doubt and moving past the feelings of crisis, panic, fear and paralysis are actually pretty practical. Working with the situation, instead of fighting and railing against it is something we know to do, but the way Pete represents it makes it seem doable.

This is one that’ll stay on my bookshelf as I know I’ll be picking it up again to learn more about embracing Plan B Plan B: What To Do When Your Dreams Are Shattered.

Who knew there was such a thing as a smart toothbrush?

I found out when I was contacted by RADIUS to review their new Intelligent Toothbrush. I enjoyed reviewing the toothbrush and decided to take a couple product shots, just for fun!

The toothbrush has a built in 2-minute timer and 30-second quadrant timer so you can brush for the appropriate time as recommended by the American Dental Association. I never remember to brush for the full two minutes, do you?

It also has a 3-month wear meter to signal time for a new replaceable head. Add the non-slip re-usable handle which reduces waste by 93% and is guaranteed for 4 years and you’ve got a smart toothbrush.

Disney has created the coolest set of educational videos to teach kids about being safe in and around the pool. They’re using Timon and Pumba from the Lion King to narrate, which keeps kids attention and makes it fun to learn. I love that!

I remember growing up and going to the local community pool. There was always a lifeguard on duty and I remember the two most important rules…

  1. No running
  2. Don’t pee in the pool

Consequences for the first one was crab walking around the entire pool in front of everyone. Perfect, embarrass kids enough that they’ll never do it again. The second one was the threat of the blue ink showing everyone you peed in the pool. No one knew if it was true and no one wanted to find out.

Some other pool safety tips…Wild About Safety2 Wild About Safety in the Pool

  • Supervision is a must. Follow the 10/20 rule when you’re at the pool. The 10/20 rule states the supervising adult needs to position themselves to be able to scan the pool every 10 seconds, and reach the water within 20 seconds.
  • Always have rescue devices, such as UL-LISTED life preservers, nearby.
  • Flotation devices, toys and inflatable swimming aids are not safety devices. They are toys and can easily puncture and deflate.
  • Always drain wading pools after children are done playing. Infants can drown in just a few inches of water.
  • Have a telephone nearby and appropriate emergency numbers posted.
  • Remove all toys when you leave the pool.

How do you teach your kids about pool safety? Why not show them the Safety Smart Disney video and let them have fun while they learn!

Do you know what I’m alluding to with the title? Tree Top Apple Juice and Applesauce… yum.

Mom Central sent me some samples of their apple juice and applesauce so I could participate in a blog tour campaign on behalf of Tree Top. I love working with Mom Central because I always get to choose which blog tours I join and I only choose to participate in the ones I know I can fully support (I also received a gift card for taking the time to participate).

I remember growing up we had apple trees in our backyard and my mom would make homemade applesauce. I have to tell you that I did not like that homemade applesauce. Sometimes it had the skin of the apples in it and it was never sweet enough. I loved when I got to go to someone else’s house and they had the store-bought kind like Tree Top… then I would eat plenty of it. Just don’t tell my mom though… she really tried.

Now, apple juice and applesauce, who can’t get behind that? My kids LOVE it! When I got the box of samples, they didn’t last two minutes in my house. I wanted to try them in a recipe or use them as a secret ingredient so I could enter it in the contest Tree Top is having, but it was too late… my family beat me to them. My son grabbed the applesauce, my daughter the juice, and my hubby the new Trim drink. Guess I know what to get next time I go to the store!

You can get some too and use it as a secret ingredient in a new recipe. Then enter the Tree Top recipe challenge to win a trip to the Big Apple! Click on the image below for more details.

BroccoliSoup Fix It & Forget It Meals with Uncle BenNow that I’m on my 75-DAY SPRINT TO THE FINISH, I’ve had to figure out how to get more home-cooked meals made quick and easy. Not only that, but I’ve got my diet plan, my daughters, and still have to feed my hubby and son. Along came the Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook Fix It & Forget It Meals with Uncle Ben Revised and Updated with over 700 slow cooker recipes. Combine that with some amazing Uncle Ben’s whole grain brown rice and I’m set for a week.

If you’re looking for an easy way to streamline your meal prep, this cookbook combined with some good old-fashioned rice from Uncle Ben’s will do the trick. My favorite recipe is on page 73… Cream of Broccoli Soup with only 6 ingredients. Gotta love that.

I actually improvised a bit on this to make it heartier and to make it last longer, so I added the traditional whole grain brown rice which takes about 40 minutes to cook. Once I made the soup in the slow cooker, I added the cooked rice to make a hearty dinner that lasts a whole week.

uncle bens Fix It & Forget It Meals with Uncle BenHere are the ingredients:

  1. 1 small onion chopped
  2. 20 oz pkg frozen broccoli
  3. 2 cans cream of celery soup (get the healthy request version without MSG)
  4. 1 can cream of mushroom soup (get the healthy request version without MSG)
  5. 1 cup grated American cheese (or eliminate it for a lower fat recipe)
  6. 2 cups milk
  7. MY ADDITION: 1 box cooked Uncle Ben’s whole grain brown rice

Saute onion in skillet until soft. Combine all ingredients in slow cooker. Cover. Cook on low 3 – 4 hours.

That’s it! My hubby is out getting ingredients for it right now so we can make our second batch tomorrow to last the whole week. Give it a try… the cookbook, the rice, the recipe… it’s a winning combination!

Ever feel like your life got off to a bad start, or that your beginning determines your ending? Think again.

Tricia Goyer is an incredibly successful and prolific author who admits that she got way off track in her teen years. But, look at her now. She just released another novel. That makes twenty books including All Things Hidden, My Life UnScripted, and the marriage book, Generation Next Marriage. She won Historical Novel of the Year in 2005 and 2006 from ACFW, and was honored with the Writer of the Year award from Mt. Hermon Writer’s Conference in 2003.

If that’s not encouragement to keep going with your own dreams despite setbacks, I don’t know what is.

Songbird under german moon tricia goyer Blog Book Review and Giveaway: Songbird Under a German MoonHer latest book, Songbird Under a German Moon takes place in 1945, just after the war has ended. The book is full of historical references, which I love, and includes photographs as a key component in solving the mystery of the main characters missing friend. Not only do you get to experience life in post-war Germany in the 40s but you get to know Frank Witt, the US Army Signal Corp Photographer.

Historical fiction, photography, mystery, romance, intrigue… what more can you ask for in a book? Your heart will be encouraged and you just might have a different outlook on this time in history. You’ll definitely find yourself entertained and swept up in the mystery and romance of the main characters.

superstress solution book giveaway Eat Your Way Out of Stress: The Superstress Solution Book GiveawayEveryone seems to be living at a breakneck pace these days. Just take a look in the mirror and you’re sure to see some signs of the toll it’s taking on you… dark circles, bloodshot eyes, caffeine addiction (and that’s just me!) Anxious is the new normal.

I’ve always known that eating right and sleeping well makes a marked difference in how I look and feel, as well as how productive and focused I am at work. The only problem is maintaining routines among a busy work and travel schedule. Especially for creatives, entrepreneurs, photographers, writers, etc… it’s often hard to maintain boundaries on what we do and when we do it. Know what I mean?

The Superstress Solution is a new book that claims to have the remedy to:

  • Relieve headaches and anxiety
  • Restore your ability to relax and sleep well
  • Control your weight
  • Build resilience against future stress

Pretty compelling claims. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably picked up quite a few diet or health books through the years to help with some of these issues. I like the idea that this book makes the connection between stress and diet because they so often go hand in hand. Give me a stressful day and I’ll give myself more liberty to eat whatever I find handy.

I’m looking forward to reading this book in its entirety AND giving one of you a chance to WIN one too! Special thanks to the publisher for sending two copies!

Hands down, my favorite genre of books is historical fiction. Something about being whisked away to another world where characters live and breath in another time and place… love it.

You’ve probably heard of the Baby Whisperer. You’ve definitely heard of the Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan. He’s been so successful at changing the behavior of dogs and their owners that he’s got an entire show dedicated to him. Not to mention an entire magazine! A good friend of mine told me that when she starts to get flustered and overwhelmed, her husband will lovingly suggest that she watch The Dog Whisperer on TV and miraculously she finds herself calm again.

Horse Whisperer Life Lessons from a Horse WhispererWell, I’ve got another whisperer to introduce to you, the Horse Whisperer, Dr. Lew Sterrett. He’s worked with over 3500 horses to take them from out of control to loving life. He’s also the Executive Director of Miracle Mountain Ranch Missions, Inc. (MMRM) since 1977. MMRM, located in northwestern Pennsylvania, is home for a summer youth camp, and a leadership training center for youth, adult, and family groups. He takes what he’s learned from his work with horses and uses it to inspire and change the lives of youth.

Now he’s taken those lessons and written a book so the average Joe, like me, can learn these lessons too… Life Lessons from a Horse Whisperer. Kind of ironic since my first blog was about life Lessons from the Scrapbook Page. Guess that’s just more evidence that I’m willing to learn from anyone and anything!

This book is about life, faith, and leadership… who couldn’t use a few gentle lessons in each of those areas?
