Reflect, Dream, Believe… and Shoot for the Moon (D153)

Reflect, Dream, Believe… and Shoot for the Moon (D153)

I can’t quite capture in words what I’m feeling tonight. Today and this entire past week have been a roller coaster, complete with ups and downs, plenty of speed and momentum, and even a little nausea thrown in. I won’t go into all the details, but I would like to briefly share the final thoughts I have before this week wraps and we start all over again tomorrow. To top it off, tomorrow is the beginning of February and the birthday... [Read More...]

Capturing History with Images & Stories (D152)

Capturing History with Images & Stories (D152)

How many stories do you have locked inside your head and heart? Are they stories from your childhood, your teen years, or even college days? Whether positive and uplifting or embarrassing lessons learned, we each hold valuable or at least entertaining stories like a deep well within us. Kind of like my grandmother who is 95 years old, the stories she has locked inside her mind are absolutely astonishing. The tragedy is that we don’t have a record... [Read More...]

Discovering Shoot From the Hip Photography (D151)

Discovering Shoot From the Hip Photography (D151)

Two weeks ago I wrote about how to get killer street shot photographs. In that article, I introduced you to Joe Wigfall, winner of the WNYC Street Shots Challenge, a contest where everyday people who take photos of people and places in NY are asked to submit their best photos. Today his inspiring and challenging interview went live on F-Stop Beyond, so I thought I’d revisit the topic of street shots while hanging out at the mall. Check out... [Read More...]

Plunged into Darkness (D150)

Plunged into Darkness (D150)

Darkness is an interesting theme to tackle. Light can be much easier or at least pairing light with darkness. After seeing Brian Palmer’s photograph of the moon and clouds and Alisa Whitley’s shot of the moon in the night sky, I decided to venture outside to take a look at the moon. Perhaps it would work for my shot of the day. As luck would have it, the entire night sky was plunged into darkness, save for the one small light of the moon.... [Read More...]

Fix it in Post… or Not (D149)

Fix it in Post… or Not (D149)

The deeper I get into the photography world, the more I learn all the little sayings that photographers have adopted and said through the ages. One of the first that I heard was “Fix it in post.” This week I’m focusing on how not to have to fix it in post. The question I’m asking this week is… How can I focus on lighting, composition, environment, camera settings, and posing to allow post processing to be optional? I’ll... [Read More...]

A Dancer’s Leap of Faith (D148)

A Dancer’s Leap of Faith (D148)

In my life as a photographer, I am incredibly blessed to work with some amazing teen girls and I find it quite coincidental that more a few are dancers (and also interested in photography). Not that I really believe in coincidence, but what a wonderful connection I have with these avid dancing, aspiring photographers. After our most recent Teen Identity photo shoot where the models completely took over my entire home and studio, clothes were coming... [Read More...]

Taking Some Product Shots (D147)

Taking Some Product Shots (D147)

Today was completely devoted to launching the Senior Model Program for my photography company, Teen Identity Portraits. From editing the images from Saturday’s photo shoot to updating the blog and Facebook fan page, I was working nonstop. I’m thrilled with the buzz we’ve already started generating and would love to have you check it out and join the fan page! One of the things we’re also doing is updating the website with information... [Read More...]

Fashion Magazine Pop Photography (D146)

Fashion Magazine Pop Photography (D146)

That’s my style… or so I’ve been told. I think it has a nice ring to it and describes one style of photography that I like to do, especially with the teen girls I photograph. I’m not sure it’s even a defined style, but if you were to try to find it, you’d see it in the teen fashion magazines like Seventeen. One main difference is the way I shoot the girls… less revealing and sexy, more fun and full of personality.... [Read More...]

Shooting on the Edge – A Teen Identity Photo Shoot (D145)

Shooting on the Edge – A Teen Identity Photo Shoot (D145)

Today’s word of the day was… EDGY. Our home and studio were temporarily taken over by teen girls in preparation for our first Teen Identity Models photo shoot of 2010. The bedroom exploded in clothes and there was a full-on salon happening with hair, makeup, nails, and stylists getting everyone ready. We’re preparing to launch our new model program for 2011 Seniors and are so excited about what we’ve got in store for upcoming... [Read More...]

My Philosophy on Sharing Information (D144)

My Philosophy on Sharing Information (D144)

Everyone has a different view on what, when, and how much knowledge and information to share. It’s a topic that can create quite a bit of hostility and heated discussion as well, at least in my experience. As I was looking for a shot today, I stumbled upon this rope I have on my dresser from an event I attended in 2008. Deciding to shoot it in various forms reminded me of the different philosophies each person takes when it comes to sharing... [Read More...]
