Why Derek Sivers Says You’re a Bad Judge of Your Own Creations

We’re clearly a bad judge of our own creations…
are you holding back something that seems too obvious to share?

He was originally a professional musician and circus clown, then created and sold a company for $22M, giving the proceeds to a charitable trust. His TED talks have been viewed by over 5 million and he was a #1 Amazon author in 2011.

Impressive, yes?

Here’s what I find even more impressive. His message. Who am I talking about?

Derek Sivers. Founder of CD Baby. Author of Anything You Want Why Derek Sivers Says Youre a Bad Judge of Your Own Creations. He will challenge you.

THREE WAYS TO CHALLENGE YOUR CREATIVITY

And today’s message for creative artists (photographers, filmmakers, writers, designers… YOU) is:

Obvious to you. Amazing to others.

Which of the three challenges above resonates with you most?

You can watch even more of Derek’s videos on his site and follow his journey as he creates a new company in Singapore. Make sure to check out the recent feature A Better Way of Business did on Derek after reading my article 5 Reasons You Must Pursue Whatever Scares You.

Thanks so much for sharing my post! I really appreciate it.

What resonates with me the most is doing what scares me. I just themed 2012. TAKING BOLD ACTION! Because I want to hide inside myself instead of facing my fears and taking difficult or insanely hard actions.

This year is going to be about taking the bold actions I need to to obtain the life I want for me and my family!

So glad you brought Derek Sivers to my attention! You’re awesome!

Great theme for 2012! Did you write it and post it somewhere you can see it every day?

Saw that Derek stopped by your site and commented. I’ll bet that made your day!

It’s not posted yet, except for on my site. But it will be, just got to figure out if I’m going to use a whiteboard or if I’m going to use art paper. I’m going to put it in multiple places. I want to think of it often.

And yeah, I was super excited by Derek stopping by. We’ve actually exchange a few lengthy emails! He says email him if you want to chat on his site, so I did. A nice size email too. He replied back with an email probably 3 times as long with suggestions and lengths to helpful resources about what I told him. HOW COOL IS THAT?!?!

So yeah, I’m STILL walking on air b/c of it!

So, the past few days there are a few thoughts that have been bouncing around in my head: 1) Be true to who I am-don’t try to imitate anyone else 2)Be INTENTIONAL about finding inspiration 3)Take chances and stop playing it safe 4)Stop stopping myself!  Thanks for posting this…great affirmation for what’s already been playing on rewind in my own mind.

Susan these are fantastic! I love that you’ve been thinking about these ideas and have now articulated them for yourself. All you have to do is remember once the obstacles hit! :)
