The Cycle of Life and Death (D302)

Much has happened in the last few days that has my mind and heart turned to contemplating the cycle of life and death.

Aren’t Spring and Summer supposed to be a time of life, rebirth and growth? Then why does it feel like winter?

Today we discovered that the beloved strong tree in our front yard has died. We don’t know when it happened, but it looks as though something got hold of it and wouldn’t let go. The tree is ravaged at the base, this once strong tree now stands weak and open to the elements. The bark that once protected it, now peels off like old paint. The color has been drained and the leaves and flowers that once brought beauty and joy to our lives are now brown and decaying. A cavernous hole has been etched out of its very core.

What is the meaning of this? Why did it happen? The only conclusion I can come to is that there is a cycle of life greater than my understanding. We are sad for this loss and remember the beauty of this tree that made its film debut in the opening of the Dreams film we created just last year…

My heart and prayers still go out to a fellow photog, Leila Jones, and her family who lost their daughter yesterday.

  • Sleep, old friend, while your children grow and we dance around their branches. In his right time we also are going to sleep and together can dream while our children grow and dance
  • Beautiful.
  • I'm so sorry to hear about the beautiful tree. So much of life, and death, cannot be explained by our feeble minds. After all, we do see through a glass darkly for now. I love the video! Thanks for sharing!
  • So glad you enjoyed the video. It's one of my favorites!
