Stop Waiting. Start Doing.

You can learn a lot from an award-winning author…

Robin Lee Hatcher is an amazing author… I’ve been a fan of her books since I picked up Ribbon of Years Stop Waiting. Start Doing. a few years ago. Since historical fiction is my favorite genre, it’s a perfect fit. She likes to write historical fiction… I like to read it. Of course, she grew higher on my list of favorite authors when I found out that she also likes photography.

Her philosophy on how to write better is not all that different from my philosophy on how to become a better photographer…

How do you find time to write?
If I’d waited until I found time to write, I never would have written a word. When I began my career as a writer, I was working a full time job, so I wrote in the evenings and on the weekends. I had a strict schedule that I stuck to religiously. When my 9th book was released, I quit my day job to write full time. I’ve been doing that for over 20 years now. I treat my writing like any other job. I sit down and write, whether I feel like it or not.

What would you say to someone who wants to become a published author?
Study the craft. Don’t settle for less than the best you can do at the time. Read, read, read. Read newspapers, magazines, biographies, histories, and all genres of fiction. And finally, write, write, write. If you write one page per day, you’ll have a 365 page novel at the end of a year. When you’re done with your first book, get right to work on the next one.

Her latest release is A Matter of Character, a fantastic read about a female author using a male pseudonym. Women writers just weren’t allowed or successful in 1918 in Idaho. The realistic characters hatch a romance with intelligence and humor. Secrets are sure to be uncovered and if you’re anything like me you’ll be inspired and motivated to keep pursuing your own dreams and using your gifts to their greatest capacity.

“I treat my writing like any other job. I sit down and write, whether I feel like it or not.” So true if you intend on being successful. No matter what you do, you'll never love your craft EVERYDAY. Some days will feel like work but I think you have to look at the overall picture to say you love what you do for a living. Great post!

I think many aspiring photogs would pursue their dreams and persevere if they only knew that the passion would rise and fall. So glad you enjoyed it!
