The Shot That Never Happened (D183)

Have you ever had an idea for a shot that you really wanted to capture, but just couldn’t get? You can see it in your mind, but can’t get it to show up in your camera.

For the second time now, I’ve tried to get a water droplet in focus, in air with a colorful background. The first time I tried it, the shots were too grainy to use because the ISO was bumped up too high. This time, well, as you can see, still no photo. I added both of my Westcott lights, as well as one of my husband’s movie lights. The green background was used to add color. I’ve read tutorials and thought I could improvise with the equipment I currently have.

Despite enough wattage shining on the water drops so I could lower the ISO to 200, I still couldn’t get the shot I wanted. Instead, you’re seeing the behind the scenes making of the shot that never happened.

From not having the right focus or speedlights, to having a water dropper that is too small, it just seemed this shot was not meant to be… at least not tonight. However, I’m not one to easily give up. It took more than a few attempts to photograph the smoke trail shots I envisioned and it also took adding some new equipment that would capture them.

I’m committed to getting this shot before the challenge is over so stay tuned for future developments. What shots have you attempted that you just couldn’t make happen? Did you give up or persist?

You are not alone. It happens to me quite often. I try and try until I get it right, but sometimes I do put it on the back-burner waiting for the “a-ha” moment to hit me.

Yes, waiting for that ever elusive ah-ha moment. I'll get it someday… just don't know when. :-)

I did this challenge myself and I think it was pretty successful with this tutorial http://photos.soboring.org/High_speed_photography/ and a lot less equipment – just one speed light. I love your blog – very inspirational.
