Want Some Pure Pleasure? It’s Not What You Think

My husband saw the new book, Pure Pleasure Want Some Pure Pleasure? Its Not What You Think, sitting on my nightstand and picked it up. “What are you reading?” he asked. Then he flipped it over.

I said, “It’s not what you think.”

pure pleasure gary thomas Want Some Pure Pleasure? Its Not What You ThinkThere’s nothing illicit or naughty in this new book by Gary Thomas, but the title does what is intended. It makes you think about what you associate with pure pleasure. In fact, the premise of the book is that many people, especially Christians, feel guilty about feeling good. Whether those good feelings are from drinking a cup of coffee or reading a great novel, or bonus projects with your spouse.

Admittedly, I do sometimes feel guilty when I rest and spend time doing something I love. Questions about whether or not I’ve worked hard enough to earn the time off bounce around in my head. Are you the same way? Pure Pleasure Want Some Pure Pleasure? Its Not What You Think tackles that issue head on with some interesting ideas about why we do that and how to stop it.

I stopped by Gary’s site because he has a ton of videos answering the most frequently asked questions about pleasure. I also found the following list about how this book can help you to…

  • Enjoy God with a new sense of freedom and delight.
  • Overcome temptation by replacing counterfeit diversions with true pleasure.
  • Feel the excitement of bringing joy to your family and friends.
  • Discover and enjoy new activities that renew your soul.
  • Experience a deeper awareness of God’s goodness in your life.

Check it out and connect with the author on Facebook and Twitter. It’s such a different take than the average Christian book telling you to get more disciplined and sacrifice more.

One of my biggest pleasures is going to Barnes and Noble, no husband and no daughter, sip a chai latte and just browse. I can get lost in all those books for hours!

Yesterday I took the day off and spent it with my son and daughter in law. After a 2 hour drive to the big city, we spent the next hour looking at unbelievable ultrasound pictures of my first grand child – It's a boy! He waved, kicked, flipped and sucked his thumb. After that exciting time we spent the rest of the day getting a few things to prepare for his arrival in July. It was truly pure pleasure and I was very blessed that they asked me to share such a beautiful experience. And to top it off, when I called my parents to tell them and told my Dad that their first great grand child would be sharing his name, he cried tears of happiness! I hope to have that experience many more times as my children leave the nest and make their own way in our world!

This will sound like an odd pleasure, but I'm reflecting on it as I retire from 30 years at a corporate job. I enjoy giving my employees their yearly evaluations. I put a lot of thought into them and focus them so I'm helping the employee both celebrate past success and develop a springboard for future development. My evaluations are rarely negative — ordinarily we've resolved any problems prior to the year-end evaluation. I like the opportunity for one-on-one time focused JUST on the particular employee, and their feedback indicates they find our sessions helpful.
