Freebie Friday—Slowing Down in the Fast Lane of Life

Slow down long enough to read this article and find out how to win a new book that will help you slow down…

slow movement bridge Freebie Friday—Slowing Down in the Fast Lane of LifeWORD OF THE YEAR
In the past few years, “slow” has made quite a comeback. In fact, I even saw a few bloggers who chose “slow” as their word to focus on for 2010. It’s quite the opposite of how most people would describe me. I think busy would be more apropos. Whether it’s busy at work, on a photo shoot, blogging, or traveling, busy seems to fit. Sometimes it seems that slowing down in the fast lane of life would be a recipe for getting run over!

TWO OPPOSING FORCES
I will admit though, that the slow movement that has been quietly making a move into mainstream is quite appealing.  I have even tried my hand at some of the slow-mo activities like cooking, knitting, reading for pleasure. Turning off the computer and spending the evening by candlelight playing cards (okay, we haven’t gone that far, but it sounds like fun). We are a modern family, but we have ancient values and life for us is a constant working out of the two, often opposing, forces.

GIVING AWAY A BIT OF SLOW
finalcover Freebie Friday—Slowing Down in the Fast Lane of LifeA writer and photographer worked together to create a new book Making a Family Home, the perfect intro into the slow movement. Now you can win a copy of your own and be one step closer to creating that safe haven for your family (details below).

Let me ask you this… “In a culture of text messages, Twitter and information overload, how can we support the values of a simpler time? More importantly, how can we pass on ‘slow’ to a generation of Baby Einstein grads?” Those are the questions Shannon Honeybloom, answers in Making a Family Home. She opens her home and shows readers how to create a safe, alive, warm shelter, one that encourages children to learn, grow and use their imagination.

Here’s what Shannon has to say about parenting and family:

“Anxiety-driven over-parenting has reached a peak, and parents everywhere are yearning to get ‘back to basics’ at home and with their children. In the end, it’s not about enrichment classes, educational videos, multiple after-school activities. It’s not about spending a lot of money or buying a lot of things. It’s about creating a calm, beautiful, and healthy home for our families. Such a home is the foundation for happiness and success in the world.”

Ah, just makes you sigh and take a deep breath, doesn’t it?

I have been working on slowing down. I look forward to tea parties with my daughter this weekend instead of checking FB multiple times. I treasure this time when my kids still want to play with mom and dad.

I am going to deactivate my facebook account. I regularly see all the people I am friends with on there and it steals time that I could be spending with my son- he starts school in september and I want to make the most of these last few months that I have him to myself.
