In my life as a photographer, I am incredibly blessed to work with some amazing teen girls and I find it quite coincidental that more a few are dancers (and also interested in photography). Not that I really believe in coincidence, but what a wonderful connection I have with these avid dancing, aspiring photographers.
After our most recent Teen Identity photo shoot where the models completely took over my entire home and studio, clothes were coming out of every direction in my room and there was more makeup in my bathroom than I’ve seen at Sephora (not really, but you get the point)!
One of the decorations I have in my bathroom, which you might have seen if you watched the Unclutter Your Life in One Week video series, is an Ikea wooden movable figure (the kind you see in artists studios). To my complete delight, when I walked in the bathroom after the cloud of clothes and makeup had been lifted, I found my little wooden figure in an amazing dancer’s leap!

How fun is that? I decided to keep it that way to remind me of the joy that these teen girls bring to my life and to keep me moving forward on the vision for Teen Identity to unleash the true beauty in every teen girl. If I have to start with one little wooden movable figure that leaps for joy, I’m okay with that.
Shot Setup
For this shot, I really wanted to focus on getting the shot I wanted in camera, rather than in post. So I set up my white seamless background, positioned one light above and to the left and one light slightly behind and to the right of the figure. I set the figure on a coffee table with a black sheet over it, but then shot so that you couldn’t see the table at all. For my lights, I’m using the light kit from Westcott that includes two 20″ Collapsible Soft Boxes, 7′ Light Stands and 500-watt Photo-floods. I love them so much I’m selling them through my OpenSky shop. Check it out and let me know what you think!
