D93: Some Old-Fashioned Goodness

I have had this candle since I was in elementary school. I only bring it out for the Christmas season and I rarely light it, usually just once a year. Then I turn off all the lights, listen to Christmas music, and enjoy the childhood memory.

When I was young, I loved Holly Hobbie. Yes, I know I’m dating myself, but who cares, I loved it. I must have identified with her rag dress since most of my clothes were hand-me-downs or from garage sales. We couldn’t afford wallpaper either, so my creative mom bought Holly Hobbie sheets and stapled them up as wallpaper for me instead. I even had a few dresses that pretty much resembled the dress you see Holly wearing on the candle.

Isn’t it amazing how something as simple as a little candle can evoke so many memories? What do you have in your life that brings back memories? Have you found a way to capture it? If anything happened to the candle, now I would still have the image to remind me.

Make sure you do that with your prized possessions as well. Once they’re gone, they’re irreplaceable. I can’t tell you how good it feels to have this image captured. I may spend some time this season taking pictures of childhood ornaments I still have. They each tell such a different story that I’d like to always remember and pass on to my kids.

Images: Looked at more images by Joey L in his Portraits around the World portfolio. He has such a distinct look at such a young age. I’m striving for that, a distinct look and style to every image I take.

HAHA! I'm a Holly Hobbie girl too. That's too funny – I haven't thought about her in years.

Very nice photo. And though I wasn't a Holly Hobbie girl ;) I came from the same era with similar memories.

You bring up a good point about taking photos of things you want to remember, even if you still have the item. Sometimes I'll carry and old knickknack from one house to another through multiple moves, when I realized that all I wanted to do was to remember the item…(it was an doll sized guillotine that I made in high school while reading tale of two cities…I made it for extra credit) So several years ago I just ended up taken a bunch of photos of the thing and then I was free to get rid of it…

Don't get me wrong…you need to hold on to old Holly Hobbie…but like you said, it nice to know…just in case.

Holly Hobbie! I remember that! She was very popular right before Strawberry Shortcake! I think I had something with Holly Hobbie on it when I was a little girl.

I have a copper bracelet, made by my dad using a discarded copper electrode he found at the steelmill where he used to work. I have had it since I was 8 or 9, and I can't remember a single day when the bracelet wasn't with me. I still haven't found a way to take a good photo of it though.

My little doughter loves my old Holly Hobbies doll and I am very proud of it! :)
I like the idea of a set of photos for not forgiving our memories.

That's so amazing you still have it. Maybe look at jewelry ads to see how they photograph bracelets. Might give you inspiration and ideas to try with yours.

You'll have to come back and let me know what you find!

Oh yeah, Strawberry Shortcake was another favorite. I have vivid memories of listening to the record on a Saturday afternoon and dancing around the living room!

You're so right! I actually read an organizing book by Peter Walsh that suggests a similar strategy. Don't keep the stuff, just figure out a way to preserve the memories that the stuff holds. I'm working on it one by one.
