D75: One Shot Wonder

Discovered a new book, Chased by the Light, featuring photography by Jim Brandenburg. It’s a 90-day self-imposed journey he set himself on. 1 photo a day…no more. For three months between the autumnal equinox and winter solstice he would make only one photo a day. No second chances.

I decided to give it a try despite the fear in the pit of my stomach that my first photo would suck and I’d forget the whole thing in order to not look stupid. Instead, I took care to search for the light, make sure my settings were right, to choose one moment, and think carefully about framing. It took more time to find and set up that one shot, but overall it took much less time than normal because I wasn’t “spraying and praying,” like Joe Buissink says.

As soon as I started to search I saw this small grouping of leaves and liked how they were all intertwined. If I moved one, they all moved. Kind of like a small family or community. I liked that this had occurred naturally, so I decided to capture it before the rain and wind comes in and blows them away.

The editing: none. I decided that while I was at this for one day I might as well take @dijea’s challenge to post unedited photos. So I literally just pulled this straight off the camera and posted it here. That’s why there is no watermark as you usually see on my images.

If you haven’t read the book, check it out. The images are fascinating and Jim gives insight into the journey periodically throughout the book. And for the record, Jim is the “one shot wonder” not me.

This is awesome - I actually got goosebumps. Wait till you see what I took today - it was truly a shot in a million with no editing.

Great idea, I'd like to learn to think before shooting, but now I am not prepared to take only one picture a day. :)
    Wonderful this winter picture.

That's a really cool idea. I may try something like that after completing this challenge. :)
