D57: Priceless Moments of Discovery

When you’re young, every day is filled with possibility. So much to learn, uncover, figure out and discover. Your mind is open, without expectation, ready for what the world has to offer.

My son is like that. Open to new ideas. Making exciting discoveries. Venturing into creative worlds of play and pretend.

I heard the words “Mommy, look at me!” I found my son playing in the water with a small squirt bottle. He took off the bottle top and began filling and emptying the bottle with water. In the process, he discovered bubbles! He was fascinated as he watched the bubbles move from the top to the bottom. I just had to capture that priceless moment of discovery.

What would it take for us to be more open to discovery—to search and expect new things to present themselves to us each day? I wonder.

Manual: Page 76—Optimizing Images with the custom setting. I did try this when I was in New York. Took some images with custom sharpening and color, but honestly didn’t see that much of a difference in the output.

Images: Looked through “The Best of LIFE.” It’s a book by LIFE magazine that includes classic images over 36 years. They culled through 18 million images to select the ones included in the book. 18 MILLION…can you imagine?

And that is exactly why I love photography…not only can I attempt to capture those special moments, but sometimes the photograph itself IS that special moment, that otherwise would have been lost.

Hah. Sitting here with my little archive of 30,000 images or so 18 million sounds pretty absurd. I really can't even fathom sorting through that many. I need to cull my archives and the sheer number of images is so daunting I keep putting it off… Which of course just makes the problem worse.

So, have you begun the daunting task of culling your images yet? Do you have a strategy or plan for making it happen? I need to do something similar and am trying to figure out how to decide what to keep and trash. Am wondering if it's just easier to get a massive hard drive and back them up there. Thoughts?
