Go!
That’s the only way to describe my day today.
One of the highlights for sure was this…

Splash King broke the Guinness World Record for high dive into a pool of water 1 foot deep. And I was there at Catalyst to see it and catch it on camera. He really did dive from the highest point ever into a kiddie pool with only 1 foot of water (Guinness was there too to verify it). They even measured it with a ruler right before he dove.
The auditorium was completely silent as he prepared. I saw him ride up the platform in his own world. He did the sign of the cross a few times and after each time he would clap and shake his fist. I could tell it was a ritual. He was gearing himself up, preparing his heart, mind and body.
The host of Catalyst spoke to him prior to the jump and asked how he was doing. Splash King said he was “petrified.” What? That was a surprise because the host assumed he’d done this hundreds of time and he has. But, the King admitted that each time he is terrified. Nothing has ever gone wrong, he’s broken other world records, but he is always petrified. But he always does it. He does it ANYWAY.
What’s the lesson in that? For me it means we don’t always have to “feel” courageous to “do” courageous things. Our emotions don’t have to dictate or limit our actions. We can walk toward a goal, dream, or vision even if we’re scared. We can make things happen even if we doubt ourselves. What a fantastic object lesson I received today!
So many other insights were taken from the speaking roster today, including Dave Ramsey, Chuck Swindoll, and Louie Giglio. Lessons about failure, being crushed, getting focused, and NEVER giving up. I’m sure they’ll inform some of the images I take in the next few days. I want to remember the lessons and keep the conference high so I’m planning to capture images to remind myself of what I learned.
Manual: As I mentioned yesterday, I wanted to review page 36—Flash Sync Mode in more detail. Went through the page again and looked at the illustrations. The options are red eye, slow, rear, and auto. I’ve actually never used these options. I’ve either used the flash via auto, sometimes in manual as a fill flash, but never in sync mode. I’m thinking I need to plan a shoot where I can try these things out. Do you use flash sync modes?
Images: Was honored to be asked to write a blog article for Pictage’s new series: “For Women Only.” My post, “Don’t Stop Believing” went live today. Naturally, I went to check it out and that’s when I discovered Chris Williams of Zoeica Images in New Orleans so I browsed through his images. Read about his journey to becoming a photographer. You’ll enjoy it.
