D36: A Nod to Langston Hughes

D36: A Nod to Langston Hughes

Earlier I mentioned a book inspired by the Langston Hughes’ poem, My People.

Today’s image is a nod to that poem and the images presented in that book. Love the simplicity and focus on this shot. A combined sense of peace and strength.

Was able to convince my husband to pose for the camera tonight. Always good to have willing subjects. Quick one light shoot. 50 mm, f/1.8 lens. 400 ISO. Edited in Photoshop to lighten and sharpen.

Have you ever set up or composed a shot based on something you saw in a book? Tell me about it in the comments.

Manual: Okay, anyone else tired of reading their camera manual? Is it just me. I’ll keep doing it, but it’s losing its lustre. Need something to keep it interesting. Read page iii—Warnings. Most important one: keep flash at least 1 meter from infants.

Images: Looked through two books today, My People and New York Rises: Photographs by Eugene de Salignac. Whose work have you been admiring lately? I’m ready for some new suggestions!

I love the lighting and mood of todays post.

Regarding setting up a shot based on a book I have several hundred ideas from books and magazines that I would like to try to reproduce the style or lighting. I think it takes time to really understand what went into a shot and how to recreate the lighting or style and I think I am just getting to the point where i understand just enough to try to recreate some of the ideas i have saved.

    Very nice shot.

I can't recall any times when I imagined a photograph based on something I read… but now it just might happen, thanks to your idea.

You're not the only one bored with the camera manual. I haven't been at it as long as you have, but I'm reading about each of the auto settings… which I never use and don't really plan to, so they're kind of irrelevant. I almost can't wait to get to the 'advanced shooting techniques' and learn about Program mode and changing the ISO… I guess it is always a good reminder to review through the basics, just in case there is something we've missed unknowingly.
