D22: Ever Feel Overwhelmed?

There are so many creative visual artists striving—and struggling—to make a business out of their art. They are hungry for success, to find ways to live out of their passion AND pay the bills.

We see the earnest desire in their hearts when we meet them in person, and hear it in their voices. We read about it in emails asking for just a bit of help and advice. It’s why we wrote our book and continue to blog and network.

Sometimes it seems that the need is so great. The competition so fierce. The market so saturated. The economy so volatile. Not always. Just sometimes. And that’s when it starts to feel overwhelming. Have you seen it? Do you know what I’m talking about?

Today I decided to capture an image of all the business cards I got from our recent speaking engagement in Orlando. It’s an apt representation of the overwhelm that sometimes threatens to derail my enthusiasm and motivation. What derails your enthusiasm and motivation? What do you do to combat it?

Manual: Page 76—Shooting Options. Read about optimizing images with the custom feature via tone, sharpening, etc. I admit I haven’t ventured into doing this. I’m thinking that I wouldn’t really need custom features and I don’t know how much difference they’d make. Have you tried it?

Images: Looked at images by LaCour today after listening to Mark Adams on AskDane.com. LaCour has a classic sense of photojournalism that creates absolutely stunning imagery. I’m always inspired by what they do and who they are.

Overwhelmed yes. Somedays underwhelmed. The beauty comes in the striving for me. I love it when you strive, fail, strive and hit an epiphany, if just for a moment. It fuels the next creative spark.

The days with no spark make me want to curl up and sleep.

I must admit that I would much rather skip the failing part. But that's just me.

This picture expresses being overwhelmed well. I thought it was a stack of papers, but the smaller index cards help make the depth of field shallower I guess.

I actually have used the custom settings to boost the contrast and make an image B&W, and actually liked the effect more than what I could do in Aperture. I used it to get my eyes more attuned to seeing the tones better (rather than just seeing it in post process). I've got my settings on normal again, but will probably switch to my high contrast b&w from time to time.

Such a great idea. I'm going to have to try that this weekend when I'm in
New York. I think it might be stunning with the cityscape. First, I'll have
to see if my camera has that capability. What type of camera are you using?

I have a Canon 40D. It's in “picture settings” for me, and I have 3 custom slots.
The basic settings are things like “Faithful” “Neutral” and “Monochrome”
So on my custom settings I boosted the Sharpness by One, boosted the Contrast to the Max, and applied a Red Filter Effect. just something fun and different.
    Enjoy New York!

    Thanks Josh! I'll try it.
